Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third daughter in their family. After her father died as a carnival barker, when Ruth was just a little girl She was required to support the family working both as a maid and server. Ruth grew up in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended school. However, she was only in school for a couple of years, then taking a break to pursue her acting profession. The path she chose was filled with problems. After obtaining a position at New York as a model for a detective magazine she found it difficult to find jobs for stage. Her next job was as an "hat check" woman at a nightclub before she gave up and relocated to Boston. She was in Boston where she worked during the night as an actor with New England Repertory Company and the rest of the time she was an usherette. She graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
